The science is the only way to get the object.
Rising with STEAM is a youth-led nonprofit combining art and STEM in hands-on projects. We run free workshops at libraries and community programs across Southern California, at no cost to the venue and with no preparation asked of its staff.
Everything runs on paper. No screens, no software, nothing to install.
Why the science has to be load-bearing
Most STEAM activities are craft with a science word attached. Kids make art about a concept and go home with a decoration. We build the opposite.
In our sessions the science is not an explanation offered alongside the activity. It is the mechanism. A kid cannot finish by following steps. They finish by understanding something.
- Sound and data
You cannot play your data without scaling it first.
- Acoustics and ratio
You cannot tune your instrument without the math.
- Light and exposure
You cannot make a sun print without controlling exposure.
The data is theirs. Their sleep, their walk to school, their neighborhood, their voice. What a kid carries out of the room could not have come from anyone else.
Where sessions happen
In person
Public libraries, parks and recreation programs, and community organizations in Southern California. Sessions work as a drop-in table at an existing event. Summer reading finales, family nights, back-to-school events and school breaks all suit the format well.
Everywhere else
The kits do the same job. Every project is written up so a teacher, librarian or parent can print it and run it without us in the room, and without paying for anything.
